A Note About Nutrition

Arielle Wolter

In pregnancy and breastfeeding nutrition is very important. Think of it, your baby started out the size of a small seed and needs enough nutrition to grow into an entire person in only 9 months. People often mistake this though and try to over eat to compensate for their growing baby. The target groups you want to eat more of are things that contains a high content of vitamins and minerals. Eating more calories alone does not guarantee a healthy mom or baby and if eaten in to much excess can cause problems due to excessive weight gain. To Eat or Not to Eat? Anything that can be eaten and comes from nature is harmless in moderation. There are many different foods that your body can be nourished by however there are a couple that should be avoided. Foods to Avoid Processed- is a difficult term to define however fast food restaurants, boxed frozen food(such as tv diners), boxed mixes(mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese) is one of the worst types of processing there is. This is because most of these use chemical processing meaning you are ingesting the chemicals they make the food with. This transfers to your baby and is what many babies are “nourished” on today. Due to this type of processing in the past 30 years the world over has seen a tremendous change in health and has more problems with things such as ADHD, Asthma and Autism. What about sugars? Have you heard that sugar is bad for you lately? Which type of sugar are they talking about? There are many sources of natural sugar, sugar cane, sugar beet, maple sugar, etc... however none of these are harmful to you in their natural state. They are all “processed” into sugar. When they are processed without chemicals they are harmless. When chemicals are used in processing to extract or crystallize sugar the sugar retains some of the chemical and therefore becomes polluted by it. There are also other “sweeteners” on the market today such as high fructose corn syrup which has been so chemically manipulated that it no longer has nutritional value and instead pollutes the body with chemicals that causes the body extreme overload over time. Anything in excess is not good for the body and sugars are no exception.
